Over-The-Rhine Kitchen/Walnut Hills Kitchen/Walnut Hills Pantry

v       Who We Are

The Over-The-Rhine Soup Kitchen in the oldest soup kitchen in Cincinnati and was founded by Reverend Thomas Bokenkotter in 1976.

Tom Geiger joined Reverend Bokenkotter in 1976 in caring for the neediest of us in our great city.  Reverend Bokenkotter opened the Walnut Hills Soup Kitchen and the Walnut Hills Pantry in 1984.  Each facility has a manager; all other support comes from volunteers.  Reverend Bokenkotter is President of the Kitchens and Pantry, and Patricia Wakim serves as Executive Director.   The Over-The-Rhine and Walnut Hills Kitchens and Pantry is a 501 c 3 Non Profit Organization.

v       What We Do

We provide meals to the area’s homeless, low income and working poor.  The Walnut Hills Soup Kitchen provides 7 meals per week; closed on Friday. The OTR Kitchen serves 5 noon meals each week, including Saturday and Sunday; closed on Monday and Friday.  In 2007, we served over 137,500 meals and distributed approximately 8,300 bags of groceries.

v       How You Can Help

We depend almost entirely on donations from private sources, with approximately 3% of our annual budget coming from the Federal Government’s FEMA Program.   We receive donations from several grocery stores, bakeries, restaurants and catering firms.  These donations keep us operating efficiently.  Anyone wishing to make a tax-deductible monetary donation or donate goods or services can email us at “aposervice@juno.com” or phone 513.961.1983 ext. #1.

In addition, our volunteers, including 34 church and secular groups, give over 14,000 hours
of their time to provide services and keep operating expenses to a minimum.  They sponsor
the Walnut Hills Kitchen and the OTR Kitchen by providing and preparing the food, enlist
volunteers, serve the meal to our guests and maintain the facility before and after the meal.
Please contact us 513-961-1983, ext. #2, if you are interested in becoming a weekend
        sponsor.

Activities at the Over The Rhine and Walnut Hills Kitchen include; meal preparation, meal service, after meal cleanup, group sponsored meals, provide pre-packaged food, pick up and deliver donations to our three locations, organize a drive for food, solicit donations for paper goods, donate office supplies and/or postage, fundraising assistance, donate facilities supplies and specialty services.

Activities at the Walnut Hills Pantry include: grocery bag preparation, stock pantry shelves, grocery bag distribution, organize a food drive, solicit donations such as personal care and infant/toddler items, collect paper and plastic grocery bags and empty egg cartons, etc.

To volunteer during the week, please call 961-1983, extension #2.  Volunteer participation begins at 9:00am preparing the meal and setting up the dining room, etc.; meals are served at Noon until l:00pm; and from l:00pm until 2:00pm the kitchen and dining room are cleaned and setup for the next day.  Kitchen and Pantry hours are as follows:

Cincinnati Interfaith Worker Center
Contact: Don Sherman - (513) 621-5991

The Cincinnati Interfaith Workers Center (CIWC) believes everyone has the right to safe and secure employment that pays a living wage; and that treats workers with justice and dignity.  We ask you to join us in an educational and organizing effort toward making that belief a reality for thousands of immigrant, day labor and low wage workers in our community.  People interested in economic justice issues, but not yet able to find a way to get involved in meaningful social activism, are turning to the national Worker Centers’ movement to express their commitment to human and civil rights.
